Acupuncture & More
Acupuncture
Acupuncture works by balancing the body’s Qi. Qi can be described as a form of bioenergy that runs along meridians. If Qi gets blocked, it shows up as an imbalance or illness. Basically, if you have a health condition, some part of your body’s system is out of balance. Chinese medical theory allows us to diagnose the imbalance… and balance it.
Cupping
Chinese cupping is a method of breaking up the blockage to restore the body’s natural flow of energy with the application of small glass/plastic/silicone cups to use as suction devices that are placed on the skin to disperse and break up stagnation and congestion by drawing congested blood, energy or other humors to the surface for the body to eliminate. This allows fresh blood/fluids to flow and nourish the once congested area.
Gua Sha
Gua sha is an important hands-on medical treatment that has been used throughout Asia for centuries. Gua means ‘to rub’ or ‘press stroke.’ Sha is a term that describes the blood congestion in surface tissue in areas where the patient may experience stiffness and pain; sha is also the term for the little red dots that are raised from applying Gua sha. This is achieved with the use of the smooth surface of a hand-held object; typically an asian soup spoon, animal horn or stone.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion or “Moxa” is a modality used concurrently with acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions and support the intention of the treatment. Leaves of the herb ‘Mugwort’ are dried and ground into small sticks or cones called moxa (similar to incense), which are then lighted and used to warm points on your body. This provides a robust compliment to the acupuncture treatment.
Tui Na
Like acupuncture, tuina massage uses the same energy meridians and acupoints to improve the qi (energy) and blood in your body to promote better health. Qi that’s blocked or not flowing can cause blockages, resulting in pain and other illness. The main therapeutic goal of tuina massage is to remove the blockages to improve local and overall qi and blood balance in the body.
